Sound sculptures from this body of work ( like Seep ) give living qualities to industrial/mechanical objects or architectural structures. The objects or tableaux (in this instance an internal network spark in mid-repair) are designed to inconspicuously blend into their environment and to not be and readily perceived as "sculpture/art." In …while you work, the repair scene that is taking place depicts the absent technician at a point in the process where network cables and connections are being assessed and re-mapped. In this moment, a monitoring device (connected in parallel to one of the internal wires) produces the sound for the artwork. The sound is a mechanized manipulation of whistling that skips beats and hisses with filtered effects that contribute to the sounds overall oddity. Between the sound, the blinking lights, and the general scene left in limbo, the artwork conjures questions about fear, safety, comfort, privacy, and the general reliability of technology. This work was first featured in the Midwest Biennial, and later at Jay Jay Gallery in California. And, most recently, it was one element in the solo multi-media installation, "Kristin Bly: More Work" at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center.
