Sound
sculptures from this body of work ( like pssst
) give living qualities to industrial/mechanical objects or architectural
structures. The objects (a plumbing pipe in this instance) are designed
to perfectly blend into their environment in order to be inconspicuous
and not readily perceived as "sculpture/art." In Seep, the
pipe appears to have a pressure release port. This port is made to look
distressed – as if an excessive amount of pressure has caused
the release port to blow-out its protective cap. The sound element emanates
from here through a small hidden speaker. The recording is a drawn out
hissing noise that suggests a gas is leak from the pipe. It was made
from a voice recording holding a "psssssssst" sound for a
long extended breath. The looped sound also includes the deep inhale
following the hissing. As such, people who stand nearby long enough
can easily distinguish the human nature of the inhale. Though the "pssst"
sound is itself a very convincing imitation, the recaptured breath breaks
the simulation and offers a moment of transparency where passersby might
experience the form as an artwork. << return to Kristin [environmental media] |
