This work was constructed from an invitation to participate in the exhibition, Incorporated at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center. The exhibition's sub-title, "a recent (incomplete) history of infiltrations, actions and propositions utilizing contemporary art," much alludes to the nature of the type of work included. Addressing such themes as exposure, disruption, and provocation, six different artists collectives approached the topic in a variety of ways. Developed as a newsense enterprise, this installation (in side out) holds the Museum to a similar scrutiny that the exhibition seeks to impart onto general corporate institutionalism. Erected in the foyer of the main entrance to the museum, is a structure that appears to be an ornate window frame. The center panel in each window is fitted with a removable plexi-box container. All employees of the museum have been asked to participate in the work by adding to these containers the trash that they generate during daily operational tasks. While it is unlikely that this collection of detritus from the Museum would ever be so sensitive as to expose deeply vaulted information, an image is made that narrates the flow of labor and the construction of ideas. As the concept of institutional transparency is played out in metaphor, a physical opaqueness obfuscates the view into the Museum's lobby. Passersby encounter the trash at eye level, and are invited to investigate the contents as an illustrative tableau from behind the scenes. >> visit The Contemporary Art Center ( Incporporated ) [ here ] << return to Kristin [environmental media] |
